Aquary ("we", "us") is an aquarium record-keeping app for iPhone and iPad, operated from the United Kingdom. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the Aquary app and the aquary.app website.
01 · The app
The app
No Aquary account
Aquary has no sign-up, no login and no Aquary account. We do not collect your name, email address or any other identity information in order to use the app.
Your records stay in your own iCloud
Everything you record in Aquary, including water tests, livestock and their histories, photographs, care tasks, equipment, foods, suppliers, expenses, timelines and notes, is stored on your device and, if iCloud is enabled, synchronised through the private CloudKit database attached to your own Apple ID. This private database is controlled by Apple and by you. Aquary the app can read it on your devices; we, the developer, cannot access it, and it never passes through any server we operate. There is no Aquary server.
When Household Sharing launches later, if you choose to enable it, records you share will be made available to the people you invite through Apple's CloudKit sharing, under your control. You will be able to stop sharing at any time.
On-device intelligence
Aquary's AI features, including spoken test entry, Ask, tank debriefs and vet or forum drafts, run on your device using Apple Intelligence. Your records are not sent to us or to any third-party AI service by these features. Speech for dictation is processed using Apple's speech recognition on the device. If a future optional feature (such as Aquary Intelligence) ever processes records off the device, it will be clearly labelled, optional, and covered by an updated version of this policy before it launches.
Home Assistant (optional)
If you choose to connect Aquary to your own Home Assistant instance, you provide its address and an access token. The token is stored in your device's Keychain and is not synchronised to iCloud. Aquary communicates directly with your Home Assistant instance at the address you provide; no sensor data or credentials pass through us or any intermediary. Disconnecting removes the token from the app.
Notifications and calendar
Task reminders use local notifications generated on your device. If you enable the optional calendar mirror, Aquary writes events to your Apple Calendar with your permission; this happens on your device through Apple's frameworks.
Photographs
Photographs you add are stored with your records, on your device and in your private iCloud database, like everything else. Aquary requests access to your photo library or camera only when you use those features.
Export, backup and restore
Full export, backup and restore are available to everyone for free. A backup puts every record and photo into a single file you control, which you can keep wherever you choose and restore on another device.
Purchases
Optional subscriptions and purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details. Apple provides us with anonymised, aggregated transaction information (for example, the number of active subscriptions) so the business can function.
Analytics and tracking
Aquary contains no third-party analytics, no advertising and no trackers. If you have opted in to sharing analytics with app developers in your iOS settings, Apple may share anonymised crash reports and usage statistics with us through Apple's own developer tools; this is controlled by your device settings, not by Aquary.
02 · The website
The website
If you use the contact form, we receive the details you enter, typically a name, an email address and your message, plus any app version or device details you choose to include. We use this information only to respond to your message and to improve Aquary, we do not add you to any marketing list, and we delete it when it is no longer needed for that purpose. Please do not include passwords, Apple ID details or other sensitive personal information in messages.
Our web host keeps standard, short-lived server logs (such as IP addresses) for security and operational purposes, as virtually all websites do. The website does not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
03 · Your control
Your data, your control
Because your records live with you, most privacy rights are things you can exercise directly:
- Access and portability: your records are visible in the app, and Aquary's free export and backup tools let you keep and restore the complete record.
- Correction and deletion: edit or delete anything in the app at any time; deleting the app's data from your device and from iCloud (via iOS settings) removes it entirely.
- Sharing (coming later): household sharing will be opt-in, per fish room, and revocable by you.
For anything we do hold, which is limited to correspondence you have sent us, you can ask us to access, correct or delete it. Aquary is operated from the United Kingdom and we handle personal information in accordance with UK data protection law (UK GDPR).
04 · Children
Children
Aquary is a general-audience app for aquarium keepers and is not directed at children under 13. It collects no identity information from anyone.
05 · Changes
Changes to this policy
If Aquary's data practices ever change, for example when optional features that process data off the device are introduced, this policy will be updated before those features launch, with the effective date above revised. Significant changes will be highlighted in the app's release notes.
